HALAL SAUSAGES - WHAT IS HALAL?

The word ‘Halal’ comes from the Arabic language, and simply means lawful, legal or permissible, in accordance with Islamic law and practices. ‘Halal’ is usually used in the context of foodstuffs. Foods which are permissible or halal, are remarkably similar to those which are permissible according to the laws laid out in the Jewish Torah and the Christian Old Testament. For example, Pork and Fish without scales are forbidden in all.

Commonly, the type of animal and the process of slaughter are considered the most important to ensure a meat product is halal. Increasingly, the good welfare of the animal is also being considered as paramount to ensure a product is fully halal. This is because under both the Qu’ran (Islamic Holy Book) and Hadith (narratives of the sayings and deeds of the last Prophet Mohammed PBUH), the importance of animal welfare is clearly stated. For example, the unnecessary caging of animals or killing of animals for sport are forbidden.
